The Altra Superior 5 is a lightweight trail running shoe that provides traction on a variety of trail surfaces.

Designed to handle any kind of terrain, the Altra Superior 5 is a fast, nimble, and lightweight trail running shoe. Sporting the brand's signature 0mm drop and a wider, foot-shaped toe box, the Superior 5 gives runners a natural ride while flying down dirt-covered switchbacks or cruising along open fire roads. The Superior has Altra's "Standard" foot shape which is right in the middle of the "Original" and "Slim" options.

The shoes includes a removable StoneGuard rock plate to provide protection and versatility for varying terrain. It does all that at an average weight of less than 269g!

The Altra Superior 5 is a lightweight trail shoe with a connected to the ground feel. The Quantic midsole feels responsive and lightweight. The MaxTrac outsole with multidirectional lugs provides great traction, and the removable StoneGuard adds extra protection from rocks and roots. Complete with an improved upper that offers a velcro gator attachment and locked-in fit, the Altra Superior 5 is a great option for trail runners looking for an agile shoe with a natural running feel.

As with all Altra Running models the shoe has a roomy, ergonomic toe box that differs greatly from the aggressive taper of traditional running shoes. This design lets your big toe remain in a straight position while allowing your other toes to spread naturally. This broader cut reduces the risk of bunions hammer toes and plantar fasciitis. The shoe also utilizes a "balanced cushioning" platform (height of the heel and the forefront are the same) that encourages a natural stride rather than elevating the heel or manipulating foot position. This is meant to promote better alignment and a more natural posture while on the move which in turn lessens impact.

The shoe's synthetic upper balances durability and breathability while comfortably and effectively locking your foot in place for a performance fit. An integrated GaiterTrap allows for the easy attachment of Altra gaiters (sold separately). The shoe's Quantic midsole comfortably cushions your foot. Keep the StoneGuard in for challenging terrain that could otherwise bruise or cause underfoot discomfort or remove it entirely to shed weight when conditions do not require bolstered protection.

Trying out the new Superior 5

I'd tried an earlier version of the Superior, but definitely prefer this one. The stone guard and sole provide some protection against bad landings on sharp rocks etc, but at the same time this shoe feels like a low-profile, minimalist, tight-gripping shoe — almost like a racing flat for the trails. An excellent addition to my trail shoe collection.

Really Great and tricky

Light weight and comfortable. Cushion is enough for my usage on road or turf. The toe box height is tricky, which is necessary to tie up the lace very carefully to avoid the toe flip up to touch to top front harder part of the shoes. Just making the toe box higher would make it perfect. The grip and traction is fine. Stoneguard can have stabilization effect on different terrains. Generally a good impression to further using altra wide toe sizing shoes.
