At approximately 5pm on July 11, I stepped into Gone Running and was instantly allured by a fiery colored rocket called the New Balance 5280. After requesting Lauren to let me try on a pair in my size, I concluded that this shoe is exactly what I need for doing track work should I decide not to use spikes. Actually the model I purchased is the V2. I had been familiar with the V1 through YouTube reviews and feedback from Jenny Barringer who was involved in its development as niche road mile racing shoe,and in which she subsequently won the famous 5th Avenue Mile . 5280 refers to the number of feet in a mile. As I move up to the next age group, I have just turned 57,I have decided to focus more on the middle distances . So for the last 12 months I have been working with a biomechanic and one of the changes I have noticed is that I am landing more on the forefoot with a higher knee lift and more power in feet and ankles, so this is a shoe that if used sparingly; when I want to run fast, can be a great addition to my shoe rotation.The types of sessions could be Bilat 30seconds by 30seconds,times trials and very short races up to 5k.. Because of its extremely curved last, it is not suitable for steady running or tempo work. Compare it to a time trial bike to a road racing bike or a dragster to an F1 car.Also I would not wear it for warming up, but just put them on when you are ready to run fast. Compared to the V1, the V2 from a distance looks no different to a minimalist racing flat.However when you look closely the shoe is extremely curved. It has a carbon plate in the forefoot and a thin midsole of fuel cell. When I tried it on , I noticed the propulsion under my forefoot. However when you want to wear them for your first run, I would suggest you warmup in normal trainers and then do 3 or 4 60 meter strides with walk recoveries, as if you would do so with a new pair of spikes. As you get more used to them start trying them out for sessions and when you are ready to use in anger….a time trial on the road before doing a short middle distance road or track race. Unfortunately due to injuring my knee from a fall, I have only done 4 fifty meter strides in them. Although they felt a little stiff, I did notice their propulsive effect.as well as their aggression . Nevertheless I need to do a few more of these stride workouts and a time trial before I can give a full assessment. However I am glad I bought them because I feel that they are suitable for how I land. To conclude! In 1944 a German scientist called Werner Von Braun invented the V1 and then the V2 rockets to destroy London. I am confident now that I now have my own New Balance designed V2 road rocket to destroy my age graded prs. As I get older.
