LONO Barefoot Shoes - First impressions

We have wanted to add a true barefoot running model to our range for a while now and we have decided to add LONO. For the last couple of weeks we have been living in a pair of the FLOW model and these are our first impressions.

Being based in HK, you have probably seen LONO pop up as a local and more affordable alternative to brands like Vivobarefoot, Xero, or Be Lenka. But are they actually good—or just another Instagram minimalist brand?

From our experience over the last couple of weeks here’s a balanced look at where LONO shines, where it struggles, and what activity they are best for.

What Makes LONO a True Barefoot Shoe?

At its core, LONO checks the fundamental barefoot boxes:

  • Zero drop (0mm)
  • Thin 6mm outsole
  • Wide, foot-shaped toe box
  • Excellent flexibility

The Flow model, one of their most popular, a lightweight barefoot shoe with a biodegradable knit upper

In short: this is not a “barefoot-inspired” lifestyle sneaker. It’s genuinely minimal.

For context, barefoot shoes are typically defined by zero drop, no arch support, minimal cushioning, and a thin sole around 6mm LONO lands squarely in that category.

Best Uses for LONO Shoes

1️⃣ Cross-Training & Gym Work

With the growing enthusiasm for gym based activities such as HYROX we have been looking to see if this shoe could contribute to helping you during these increasingly popular activities. The LONO Flow line is repeatedly positioned as a barefoot cross-training shoe With a 6mm outsole and strong flexibility, it allows for:

  • Natural foot splay during squats
  • Stable ground contact for deadlifts
  • Better proprioception during agility work

The flow version also has a 2mm, sock liner which adds a degree more underfoot cushioning for responsiveness while staying low-profile — a nice middle ground between pure minimal and total ground harshness.

We have used them a few times in the gym and they really feel grounded and stable. This makes them a fabulous gym shoe. This is really where they shine.

Compared to other brands:

  • More flexible and lower-profile than many gym-focused minimalist trainers.
  • Less bulky-looking than some Vivobarefoot models.
  • Often significantly cheaper (around $768 hkd for the Flow model)

If you want a strength-training barefoot shoe that doesn’t feel like a rubber slab, LONO is strong here. For HYROX however, you really need to adapt to running in such minimalist shoes and with 8 x 1k to do, be sure you are ok foregoing the additional cushioning from a more stacked shoe before diving in to it.

2️⃣ Warm Weather & Sockless Wear

HK is most certainly hot and for everyday wear the LONO FLOW has a breathable, sock-like knit uppers and a lightweight, flexible feel.

That makes them especially good for:

  • Summer walking, be it around town or just casually in the office.
  • Travel, especially when your feet swell on longer flights. Super easy to pull on and off.
  • Casual everyday wear
  • Beach days (dry condition - see later)

They’re more breathable and can be washed easily and comfortable to wear without socks, great for the beach (but not rock scrambling)

3️⃣ Foot Strength & Advanced Minimalism

We know and support the benefits of Zero to Low Drop shoe combined with a wide toe box for good foot health. There is something very natural about walking and running in such minimalists shoes. You really can feel your feet getting a good workout.

With care you can adapted to barefoot footwear as part of your routine and keep your intrinsic foot muscles working. We don't however believe that its good to force a change in you running shape by making your running painful. So wear them carefully and get a feel for what works and what does not for you.

Key Benefits Compared to Other Barefoot Brands

✅ 1. Affordability

The FLOW model that we have been trying retails at $769hkd which is almost half of the price of the equivalent Vivobarefoot model. This makes them a very economic alternative.

LONO often comes in significantly cheaper—while maintaining zero-drop construction and wide geometry.

For budget-conscious barefoot users, this is a major benefit.

✅ 2. Wide Toe Box

We love having a wide toebox in shoes and the LONO does not disappoint. You will feel the comfort if you have:-

  • Naturally wide forefoot
  • Bunions
  • Splayed toes
  • High toe mobility needs, we will be sharing a lot more soon on the benefits of improving Toe Strength

✅ 3. Aesthetic Minimalism

Putting on a pair of FLOWS feels like putting on a pair of slippers and for everyday use are very comfortable and easy. Very natural feeling and they look cool too.

Where LONO Is Not the Best Choice

There is one aspect we need to alert you too however,

❌ 1. Wet Conditions & Aggressive Terrain

We were caught during these last two weeks in the rain and even when walking around town on wet pavement, the grip would not be recommended. The compound is clearly not designed for those type of conditions. Therefore these are not shoes you want to be using in:

  • Mud
  • Technical trail
  • Slippery pavement

Maybe we will get a Vibram Megagrip version sometime !

Who Should Buy LONO?

LONO is best for:

✅ Budget-conscious barefoot enthusiasts
✅ Wide-footed athletes
✅ Gym lifters and cross-trainers
✅ Warm, dry - weather minimalists
✅ People wanting a less bulky aesthetic

It’s not ideal for:

❌ Use in wet conditions

Final Verdict

LONO isn’t just a “cheap Vivo alternative.” It’s a legitimately minimal, flexible, wide barefoot shoe with strong gym and lifestyle appeal. It can be your comfortable everyday shoe.

Its biggest advantages:

  • True zero-drop barefoot design
  • Excellent flexibility
  • Competitive pricing
  • Wide, foot-shaped toe box

Its biggest risks:

  • Use in wet conditions.

If you’re looking for an affordable barefoot shoes for everyday use that can also be used for cross-training LONO is absolutely worth considering.
