ALTRA Torin 9: The Everyday Road Shoe Gets a Serious Upgrade

For runners who love ALTRA’s natural fit, zero-drop platform, and roomy toe box, the Torin line has long been a go-to daily trainer. But the new ALTRA Torin 9 represents one of the most meaningful updates the series has seen in recent years.

We have been running in it for about a week in pretty mixed weather that has given us the opportunity to test one of the most important upgrades. The new Vibram outsole!

Compared with predecessors like the Torin 8 and Torin 7, the Torin 9 focuses on three key improvements: better grip, a more balanced ride, and a more refined step-in feel.

1. More Confident Grip Underfoot

One of the biggest upgrades in the Torin 9 is the move to a Vibram® XS DURA outsole. Previous models, including the Torin 8 and Torin 7, used a standard rubber outsole. The new outsole is designed to improve durability and traction for daily road running, walking, and mixed urban conditions.

Some may ask why Vibram on a road shoe. Well, in Hong Kong if you have ever run along the waterfront or on many of the tile on steps you will know it can be very slippery. The Vibram here is a big help. 

According to ALTRA, the Torin 9 outsole is 8.5% grippier than the Torin 8, giving runners more confidence when roads are wet, corners are sharp, or pavement conditions are less than perfect. We certainly have plenty of that is Hong Kong.

That may sound like a small detail, but for an everyday trainer, grip matters. Daily running shoes are used in all kinds of conditions: early-morning damp pavements, painted road crossings, light gravel patches, and tired late-run form. The improved outsole helps make the Torin 9 feel more secure and versatile than its predecessors.

2. A New Midsole Designed for Softness and Stability

The Torin 8 and Torin 7 both used ALTRA EGO™ MAX foam, a cushioning platform known for comfort over daily mileage. The Torin 9 introduces a new P35X™ dual-density midsole, which is one of the most important performance changes in the shoe.

Running in the Torin 9 the softer feel underfoot is a significant improvement over the earlier models. The P35X™ midsole is firmer on the outside and softer on the inside, with the goal of creating a ride that feels both cushioned and stable. versions.

So beyond just feeling soft, the shoe is intended to provide a more controlled platform underfoot. That can be especially useful for:

This is especially notable because past Torin models received mixed feedback from some runners around heel fit and comfort. While the Torin 7 and Torin 8 were capable daily trainers, the Torin 9 is a smoother, more polished upper package.

However, it does feel like the shoe in general runs small (short and narrow). We would recommend going up 1/2 a size from your normal choice of shoe. 

Apart from that the result is a shoe that feels better not just during the run, but from the moment you put it on.

4. Lighter Than the Torin 8

Despite adding a Vibram® outsole, the Torin 9 is slightly lighter than the Torin 8 in the men’s model. ALTRA lists the men’s Torin 9 at 9.8 oz / 269 g, while the men’s Torin 8 is listed at 10.15 oz / 287.7 g.

That makes the Torin 9 a little more nimble underfoot, which is useful for a shoe designed to handle daily miles. It is not a racing flat or a speed-day super shoe, but the reduced weight helps it feel less bulky than some earlier high-cushion daily trainers.

Interestingly, the Torin 7 was also listed at 9.8 oz / 278 g for men, so the Torin 9 keeps a familiar lightweight daily-trainer feel while introducing a more advanced outsole and midsole package. 

5. Still True to the ALTRA Formula

Even with the updates, the Torin 9 keeps the features that ALTRA fans expect:

• 0 mm heel-to-toe drop
• FootShape™ fit
• Neutral support
• Road-focused daily training design
• Room for natural toe movement

The Torin 9 has a 28 mm stack height, neutral support, and ALTRA’s Standard FootShape™ fit. 

This means the shoe still encourages a natural foot position while giving enough cushioning for daily road running and walking. For runners who liked the Torin line because it felt natural rather than restrictive, the Torin 9 does not abandon that identity.

6. A More Modern Daily Trainer

Compared to the Torin 7 and Torin 8, the Torin 9 feels like a modernization rather than a total reinvention. The biggest changes are practical ones:

The Torin 9 is still a comfortable zero-drop road shoe, but it now brings more outsole grip, a more tuned ride, and a better-finished upper.
