Trailblazing with Nikki Han: Hong Kong’s Endurance Star

If you’ve ever been captivated by the rugged beauty of trail running and the grit it takes to conquer extreme races, then Nikki Han’s story will inspire you. A remarkable figure in Hong Kong’s trail running scene, Nikki is not just a fierce competitor but also a testament to passion, resilience, and balance in life.

From her roots near Eccleston in Northeast England to becoming a celebrated trail runner in Hong Kong, Nikki’s journey is as inspiring as the trails she conquers. This blog dives into her incredible achievements, training philosophies, and what keeps her pushing boundaries well into her 50s.

The Trail Running Journey

Nikki began trail running around 2010, once her kids started full-time school, giving her the time to embrace the trails fully. Supported by her family, she has become a legend in the sport, especially known for being the first female finisher of the Four Trails race in Hong Kong—a feat she accomplished twice, a record no other female has matched.

Her love for trail running is fueled not only by competition but also by the sheer joy of being on the trails. Nikki loves the accessibility of Hong Kong’s trails, where you can escape into nature just minutes from home—something she cherishes deeply.

Achievements and Ambitions

Aside from the Four Trails, Nikki has excelled in numerous other races across Hong Kong. She speaks fondly of the Wilson Trail and the Raleigh-Wilson routes, the North Face 100, and the Salomon 50, where she recently claimed the solo female winner title.

Internationally, Nikki tackled the UK’s Spine Race in summer 2025—a brutal ultra that tests endurance over rough terrain and extreme weather. She’s gearing up for the winter Spine Race, a 460-kilometer challenge filled with freezing temperatures, unpredictable weather, and rugged landscapes. This race demands not only physical stamina but also navigation skills in harsh conditions.

Training and Lifestyle Balance

Training for ultra races is a demanding commitment. Nikki’s weekly mileage can reach up to 100 kilometers with significant elevation gain. She balances intense training phases with essential rest, highlighting the importance of listening to her body. After a two-month break to recover, she’s back preparing for her next big challenge.

Nutrition-wise, Nikki keeps things simple—favoring real food for longer races, like pasta and sandwiches, which settle her stomach better than gels alone. For shorter runs, she relies on gels and Amino Vital for quick energy.

Injuries and challenges have tested her resolve, such as a tough period with Achilles pain linked to hormonal imbalances. Through proper medical attention and strength training, Nikki has bounced back stronger than ever, showing that perseverance and self-care go hand in hand in endurance sports.

Community and Inspiration

At 56 years old, Nikki is a vibrant member of the Gone Running Joint Dynamics team, a group of like-minded runners who inspire and push each other to excel. The camaraderie and shared passion keep her motivated to defy age stereotypes and aim for her personal bests.

She credits teammates like Ryan Whelan, Will Hayward, Jeff Campbell, Chang and Katrina Hamlin for spurring her on, proving the power of community in a sport often seen as solitary.

Living in Hong Kong: A Perfect Backdrop

Nikki appreciates Hong Kong not just for the challenging trails but for its vibrant culture and welcoming people. The city offers a unique blend of peaceful nature and bustling urban life, along with safety and accessibility that make it a perfect home base for an ultra runner.

Her fondness for the local trails is evident—being able to step out the door and immerse herself in nature within minutes is a luxury she values highly.

Looking Ahead

With the winter Spine Race on the horizon, Nikki is preparing for one of the toughest races in her career. She aims to beat the brutal weather and challenging terrain with a hopeful target of around 110 hours. Her approach is grounded in experience, grit, and a love for solo adventure in the wild.

As she prepares to face freezing winds and icy conditions, Nikki’s story reminds us all that age is just a number, and with passion and support, remarkable achievements are possible at any stage of life.

We’ll be cheering Nikki on every step of the way and can’t wait to see how she conquers the winter challenge. Here’s to more trails, more adventures, and more stories from this extraordinary athlete!
